Children’s Dentistry

We are a very family-friendly practice and welcome children of all ages from babies to toddlers and even teenagers.

We take great care to help teach your children about the importance of cleaning their teeth properly and also show them exactly how to do this. We talk to them about eating healthily and the importance of choosing the right drinks. With regular visits we’re able to identify problems as soon as these start to become visible. Our friendly dentists and nurses will make your children feel at ease, giving them a ride in the chair and explaining what’s going on.

We recognise the importance of your child's early dental experience. We make sure it’s a positive and fun one.  You can relax knowing that even if your child cries or gets a little upset, they’re in safe hands with an understanding and caring team.  We ensure that they won’t have a bad experience that may put them off going to the dentist later in life.

In order that parents and children learn to look after their teeth as they grow up, we offer Teeth Cleaning Clinics.

Some simple tips on looking after your child’s teeth:

  • Register your baby with a dentist as soon as possible to ensure they are attending regular appointments from 6 months of age or when the first teeth emerge.

  • Encourage young children to brush their teeth twice daily and supervise them to ensure it becomes a normal part of their day.

  • We recommend regular dental hygiene check-ups at least once a year to check the development of teeth and to ensure that any plaque build-up is removed. In young children tooth fissures (fine but deep pits in the back teeth) are common and can be treated with fissure sealants to help protect the teeth.

  • Avoid giving your children food and drink with high sugar content. Chocolates and sweets should be consumed only in moderation.  Fruit juice is acidic and fizzy drinks in particular are high in sugar and can damage the enamel. Drinking milk is great for the development of your child’s teeth as it has a high calcium content. Dummies and bottles should be avoided after twelve months as they can cause problems with teeth that are coming through.

As your child’s teeth develop they may require orthodontic work which helps ensure the correct positioning of their teeth.  Your dentist will monitor this and can advise on any required treatment which will normally take place between nine and fourteen years of age. We have a number of specialist orthodontic practices that we refer our patients to for treatment.
