Fillings

Most of us will need a filling at some point in our lives for various reasons, such as damage, decay or wear to the surface of the tooth.

Many people choose composite resin (tooth coloured) fillings over metal coloured amalgam for aesthetic reasons.

These composite fillings are made from a mixture of plastic and glass called silicone dioxide and have been in use for over forty years. Modern composite fillings are just as hard-wearing and long-lasting as amalgam and are used in all teeth today.

Your questions on composite fillings answered:

  • Although amalgam fillings are available on the NHS, white fillings on back teeth are not as standard, as they are more complex to place – If you want white composite fillings on back teeth you may need to pay for them.

  • Despite this cost, white composite fillings are chosen by many patients due to the aesthetic benefits.

  • Modern composite materials are now more durable than ever, with many now as strong as amalgam.

  • Depending on where the filling in your mouth is located and the depth of the cavity, the life expectancy of your composite filling may be affected.

  • It takes longer to place a composite filling (approx. 15-20 minutes) than an amalgam one as a more complicated procedure is involved.
