Dentures

Dentures are removable devices which can be used to replace one, several or even all of your teeth. Commonly known as ‘false teeth’, they have been used as a way of returning the look and function to the mouth for many years.

By supporting facial features such as the lips and cheeks they can have a positive effect on the overall appearance of the face.

Full dentures replace all of the teeth, while a partial denture is used to replace only some of the teeth.

Dentures can be made of either acrylic (plastic) or cobalt chrome (metal). Cobalt chrome dentures are stronger and lighter while still having the same natural appearance as acrylic ones.

How are dentures made?

Several appointments are required in order to make sure your denture fits as well as it possibly can. Firstly a mould or impression of your teeth will be taken using a putty like material. Then care will be taken to choose the correct shade and shape for the replacement teeth, and these will be tried in before the final dentures are made.

Overall the whole process can take between 4-6 weeks from start to finish.

Caring for your dentures:

Dentures can last for many years if cared for properly. These tips will help you keep your dentures clean in and good working order:

  • Always remove them at night (unless you are advised otherwise) so you can clean your dentures and rest your gums.

  • Use either a soft toothbrush or special denture brush to brush your dentures, as well as special denture cream.  Never use a normal toothpaste as it is abrasive and can damage the dentures.

  • Keep your dentures wet as they can change shape if they dry out. Storing them in water with a denture cleaning tablet will help maintain shape and also remove stains.

  • Ensure you brush your remaining teeth if you have them as well as your gums so that they remain healthy.

  • Attending regular check-ups will ensure that your dentures continue to fit comfortably and securely, and keep your mouth healthy.

Should you have any problems with your dentures causing pain, feeling loose or making unusual noises, then get in touch with the practice straight away.
